An estimated 130 buildings were affected by the natural disaster.

The initial count of missing persons was 113 and has been brought down to 80 as the Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga charged uniformed men to do all they could to help find the remaining victims in the shortest possible time.

Four persons were confirmed dead and two have been discovered alive. Atami usually popular for its destination as a hot spring resort has a population of 30,000.

It is believed that the landslide occurred due to heavy rainfalls.
