At least three policemen have been reported dead, and ten others critically injured after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed along Abakaliki/Enugu highway, in Ebonyi State.
Though details of the accident are still sketchy, Police sources said the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday.
Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Garba, who confirmed the development via a telephone, said the victims were returning from Effium Community where they had gone to restore peace between two warring tribes in the area.
The police boss said the 10 injured officers were receiving intensive care at an undisclosed hospital in Abakaliki.
Recall that a bloody communal clash had erupted a fortnight ago, in Effium Community, Ohaukwu local government area of Ebonyi state between two neighbouring tribes, Ezza Effium and Effium, leading to the imposition of a dusk to dawn curfew in the affected area by the state government.
