At least 11 protesters were arrested by the Israeli police for breaking through police barriers and blocking a main road in Tel Aviv during a demonstration against Judicial reform plans by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s new right wing government. Numerous opinion polls have shown a majority of Israelis are against his government’s plan.
The government’s judicial reform plans have sparked nationwide protests in Israel and caused alarm among economists, former security officials and legal experts at home and abroad.
Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption charges, says the reforms will strengthen democracy and boost business. He has dismissed protesters as “anarchists” unwilling to accept the decisive right-wing victory in a November 1 election.
