Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday (February 24) thanked Ukraine for standing firm against Russia after the invasion a year ago.

Scholz emphasised Germany’s firm support for Ukraine and said he was working to strengthen the international alliance against Russia.

Scholz’ comments came after a video conference meeting with other leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) where the seven leading Western industrialised countries agreed, that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should set up a programme to stabilise and rebuild Ukraine.

G7 aid to the country so far totals 37 billion euros, Scholz said after the virtual meeting of the heads of state and government of Germany, the USA, Great Britain, France, Italy, Canada and Japan in Berlin.

Germany has a share of more than 14 billion euros in this.

The G7 had also committed themselves to further sanctions against Russia, said Scholz.
