British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has told parliament that any agreement between Britain and the European Union on Northern Ireland’s border needs to ensure sovereignty, safeguard the province’s place in the United Kingdom and ease trade problems.
Sunak said parliament would express its view in response to a question from the opposition Labour party’s leader Keir Starmer on whether parliament will get a vote on any potential deal.
After the leader of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), Jeffrey Donaldson asked if Britain would seek to address issues with the trade rules – known as the Northern Ireland protocol – by rewriting the Brexit treaty text.
Sunak said he had heard Donaldson’s concerns “loud and clear”.
