The Ogun state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has blamed the Sagamu riot on governor Dapo Abiodun’s directive that residents should continue to spend old naira notes despite the expiration of the deadline given by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Earlier violent protests began in front of the palace of the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, with some youths barricading roads and setting bonfires.
They set three commercial banks on fire, invaded the council secretariat and carted away the legislative house mace.
Abiodun, however, condemned the Sagamu riot and described it as politically-motivated.
Addressing newsmen, the State Secretary of PDP, Sunday Solarin dismissed Abiodun’s allegations, saying the governor also distributed old notes to the residents, thereby instigating people against the Federal government.
