The brother and stepfather of Tyre Nichols, the Black man fatally beaten by Memphis police officers have praised their loved one and thanked activists at a news conference held a day ahead of Tyre’s funeral in Memphis, Tennessee.
A briefing at Mason Temple was attended by veteran rights activist Al Sharpton, president of the NAACP’s Memphis branch Van Turner, and Tyre’s family members.
Responding to a question on whether the Black community should “strike back” in the aftermath of the incident, Tyre’s brother Jamal Dupree said the deceased was “the most peaceful person and would have wanted the issue to be solved peacefully.
