During Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s inauguration as President of Brazil on Sunday (January 1), the president of the Federal Senate asked those at the ceremony to remember soccer star Pele with a moment of silence.
Rodrigo Pacheco, leader of Brazil’s Senate, also mentioned the passing of former Pope Benedict, who died on Saturday at the age of 95.
Pele, the legendary Brazilian soccer player who rose from barefoot poverty to become one of the greatest and best-known athletes in modern history, died on Thursday (December 29) at the age of 82.
