Four Nigerian farmers and some villagers are to receive 15 million euros from Nigerian subsidy of Shell as compensation for oil pollution in their villages along side an installation of a leak detection system which would prevent future oil spills.
The Executive Director Friends of the Earth Nigeria, Chima Williams a legal practitioner while speaking with our correspondent in Edo State said; The historic victory at the courts and the acceptance of Shell to do the needful is a victory for all.
Recalled that in 2007, farmers and fishermen, together with Friends of the Earth Netherlands, initiated legal proceedings against the headquarters of Shell in The Hague due to oil pollution which took place between 2004 and 2007 in the villages of Goi, Oruma and Ikot Ada Udo Communities in Niger Delta.
