Dozens of women were seen marching on a street in western Kabul on Thursday (December 22), protesting a ban by the Taliban-run administration on women from tertiary education, video posted by local media showed.
The decision to bar women was announced on Tuesday (December 20) evening in a letter to universities from the higher education ministry, drawing condemnation from foreign governments and the United Nations. Since the announcement, female university students across the country have been turned away from campuses by Taliban guards.
The bar on women students is likely to complicate the Taliban administration’s efforts to gain international recognition and to get rid of sanctions that are severely hampering the economy.
