European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has disclosed that her contacts with the new British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on their post-Brexit trade row over Northern Ireland have been encouraging.
Addressing Irish lawmakers in parliament, Von der Leyen said a solution was ”within reach.”
Technical talks resumed in October for the first time in seven months on the Northern Ireland Protocol, the part of the Brexit deal that mandated checks on some goods moving to Northern Ireland from the rest of the United Kingdom.
