Denmark: Security, Economy May Impact Votes In Election

After decades of living in a comfortable welfare bubble and topping the world’s happiness index, Danes’ sense of safety has been shaken by geopolitical strife and economic uncertainty, a theme likely to impact how Danes vote next Tuesday.

The prospect of energy shortages, rampant inflation, and the war in Ukraine has fuelled an unprecedented sense of insecurity among Danes.

According to a May survey conducted by TrygFonden, more Danes worry about household expenses now than during the worst years of the 2008 financial crisis, and the number of Danes anxious about Russian aggression nearly doubled after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.
