Media Literacy: Buhari Calls For Global Funding To Fight Fake News

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on all nations, multilateral and donor agencies, to support global financing of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) to fight fake news, misinformation.

The President made the call when he declared the UNESCO Global Media and Information Literacy Week open..

The President who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari said he was aware that one of the major outcomes of the Conference will be the Abuja Declaration.

In his remarks, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, who decried the unregulated use of social media and other digital platforms worldwide, noted the need for individuals to be adequately equipped with enough knowledge to manage the information at their disposal.

Assistant Director l-General, Communication and Information, UNESCO, Dr Tawfik Jelassi, said the challenge of trusting misinformation and fake news in information dissemination is truly a multi stakeholder challenge that could be tackled in the most inclusive possible way.
