In accordance with the International Maritime Organization’s policy, the federal government has implemented efforts to enable the nation to attain net zero carbon emission for shipping by 2050.
Minister of Transportation Mu’azu Sambo said Nigeria is committed to the disbursement of the much-anticipated Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF) to enable ship owners to acquire newer ships with modern technologies that would reduce environmental hazards.
Sambo was speaking in Lagos yesterday at the 2022 World Maritime Day celebration organized by the Federal Ministry of Transportation with the theme “New Technologies for Greener Shipping.”
he urged the marine industry to exert more effort in the areas of resource mobilization, training, education, and employment development, as well as the complete execution of maritime rules and regulations.
Listing other strategies, the director general of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Bashir Jamoh, said Nigeria plans to cut its Greenhouse Gas emissions intensity by 20 percent by 2030 – and a further 45 percent reduction conditional on receiving climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity building.
