Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Monday (August 29) that the newly instituted ‘Memorial day’ was to remind the world about Ukrainian losses from the 2014 battle of Ilovaisk onwards.

“This Memorial Day is set for the end of summer, August 29 to remind everyone of the tragic events of 2014. To remind everyone of the tragic events of 2014. About Ilovaisk. That this war, which began with the occupation of our Crimea, with attempts to seize Donbass, should end in that very place. In the liberated Crimea, in the liberated cities of Donbas, with our troops reaching the state border of Ukraine.”, he said.

Speaking during his nightly address, Zelensky added that Ukrainian troops will chase the Russian army “to the border” as his senior advisor confirmed Ukrainian troops had broken through Russian defences.
