Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Wednesday (August 3) he would like to see China opposing Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Speaking via video link at an event organised at the Australian National University in Canberra, the leader stressed that China’s neutrality was much better than its support or direct involvement in the conflict.

In May, relatives of Ukrainian fighters besieged in the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol had appealed to Chinese President Xi Jinping to help save wounded soldiers before fighters surrendered.

In June, G7 leaders urged China to use its influence to stop Russia’s invasion in Ukraine.
