Peruvian president Pedro Castillo says he has received a ‘slap on the cheek’ from the opposition in his first year of government, but explains that he’d work with them for the good of the nation during his upcoming second year.
During his address to the nation at the Congress on Peru’s Independence Anniversary, Castillo also accused the oligarchy and factual powers of wanting to destitute him from his position.
Within the first minutes of his address in Congress, an opposition lawmaker yelled ‘Corrupt’ at him.
Castillo is facing a political storm amidst several investigations into allegations of corruption in his entourage, which have dented his popularity after he came to power promising to redistribute the wealth of the mining country.
During his message, hundreds of people marched in Lima for and against the president, some calling for the closure of Congress and others for his resignation.
