Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said yesterday that his country’s armed forces continued to resist Russian attacks to ensure Ukraine remained independent.

Speaking during his nightly video address, Zelenskiy said towns re-taken by Ukrainian forces required “colossal funds” for reconstruction.

He said there had been little change on the battlefield on Monday. Russia captured the Luhansk city of Lysychansk on Sunday (July 3), bringing an end to one of the biggest battles in Europe in generations. For two months, Moscow brought the full might of its ground forces to bear on a small pocket of the front line. It completed Russia’s conquest of Luhansk province, one of two regions it has demanded Ukraine cede to separatists in the Donbas region.
