Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has denied owning the land where the Ikoyi building fell.
Osinbajo described the incident as a tragedy, expressing his condolences to the relatives and families of everyone killed, maimed, or harmed in the collapsed building under construction on Gerrard Road in Ikoyi.
Refuting the claims that he worked with Lagos State regulatory officials to get the site opened after it was sold to him by Chief Michael Ade Ojo, Chairman of Elizade Motors, Osinbajo declared that he has never been involved in any land development since he became the Vice President.
“At no time did the VP buy this or any other piece of land from Chief Michael Ade Ojo, or enter into any transaction for the sale of that land or any other piece of land from Chief Michael Ade Ojo, or anyone for that matter,” according to a statement from Osinbajo’s Senior Special Assistant on Media & Publicity.
“The Vice President’s whole fortune and wealth have been made public.”
He further alleged that the Vice President never discussed the unsealing of the building on Gerrard Road in Ikoyi, which later collapsed, with the Lagos State Governor or any other state government official. He has never urged Lagos State to take any further regulatory action concerning the building collapse, or any other building in that regard.
“I have no stake in the property, the building, or the development, and I have never had any interest in the land, the building, or the development,” Osinbajo went on to say.
part of the statement read that the wickedness and ruthlessness of a lie that seeks to exploit a tragedy in which so many people have died, even as rescue operations continue, and in complete disregard for their loved ones’ feelings and untold grief for political gain reveals destructive desperation, as well as the lack of compassion of those who perpetrate such despicable lies.
The Vice President hinted that he has informed his lawyers about the “shameful” publishing and that they will take swift legal action.
