The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has blamed the Federal Government’s inability to complete the Kano-Katsina dualized road project for the road crash that claimed five of their members.
The Zone A Coordinator of the national students’ body, Usman Mazadu, who let this out after receiving the news, lamented the state of bad roads across the country, with particular reference to the Kano-Katsina project, six years after it was awarded.
The students from the Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kano, were on their way from Kano to Katsina, to attend an event.
It was supposed to be an extraordinary security summit and the 25th inauguration and vote of confidence on the Zone A leadership of the NANS before the news of the road crash, which claimed five lives filtered in.
The students were already gathered and set to begin the ceremony when suddenly the hall was thrown into a sober and tense atmosphere, with the news of the road crash.
The Zone A Coordinator of the national students’ body who could not control his tears, lamented that the road dualization project was awarded during the previous administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
He said six years down the lane, the 30 kilometres project is yet to be completed, alledging the inability of the present administration to complete it, as the cause of the death of the students.
He promised to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the current state of the road.
According to Mazadu, the government lacked the focus and wisdom to pilot the affairs of the country, resulting in non-purposeful leadership.
He described the incident as a call for sober reflection and the need for the government to wake up to its responsibilities, as other students share their thoughts over the incident.
Governor Aminu Masari condoled the entire students’ body over the incident, describing it as unfortunate.
Masari who was supposed to be the guest at the ceremony was represented by his Special Adviser on Higher Education, Bashir Ruwan-Godiya.
He urged them to always be selfless in service, as done by past Nigerian leaders.
All other activities lined up for the ceremony have been shifted as the national secretariat of the students’ body had in a statement earlier declared a 3-day mourning period for the repose of the dead students.
