The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed a shooting incident in Mani Local Government Area of the state, involving personnel of the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, leaving one person injured.

The spokesman of the command, Superintendent Gambo Isah, told reporters that the incident happened at Fadi Gurje village of Mani Local Government Area.

According to Isah, the yet-to-be-identified personnel of the NCS inside a patrol vehicle, stormed the village, fired several shots into the air, and escaped to an unknown destination.

He said as a result of the action, a 35-year-old Auwal Sani of the same address was shot on the leg.

Isah hinted that the victim has been rushed to the Orthopedic Hospital, Katsina, and is responding to treatment.

The police image maker further said efforts are on to find the identity of the erring officers and bring them to justice.

He, therefore, said the Commissioner of Police, Sanusi Buba, has called for calm in the affected community, enjoining them to go about their lawful businesses, as the police are working closely with the Nigerian Customs Service’s leadership to resolve the problem and bring the perpetrators to book.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Katsina Customs Area Command, Danbaba Isah, has denied receiving any report of the incident but promised to contact the enforcement unit at the area and revert as soon as possible.

This is the third time this year that the personnel of the NCS are involved in some accidental discharge while pursuing smugglers leading to the killing of 10 persons and injuring 20 in Jibiya Local Government Area, while the second was the firing at the convoy of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ya’u Gwojo Gwojo, last month.
