The popular Benin/ Lagos expressway by the University of Benin, UNIBEN, main gate, Ugbowo campus this Tuesday morning was on lockdown for several hours as students of the university barricaded the road to protest the 20, 000 Naira increment of late school fees paid by the management of the institution.
The students want the school management to remove the additional 20, 000 Naira for late payment of fees and provide basic amenities for them.
The protest against the increment of late school fees paid by the students of the University of Benin at the main gate of the Ugbowo campus lasted for several hours leaving road users stranded due to the heavy traffic the protests caused due to the blockage of the Benin/ Lagos expressway by the protesting students.
While a set took over the expressway and the school main gate another group marched around the school premises to kick against the decision of the institution management of the new school fees increment.
They want the University of Benin management to reverse the decision, even as they accused the school authority of not providing them enough lecture halls to receive lectures and other basic amenities.
All efforts to get the side of the UNIBEN management through the Public Relations Officer proved abortive.
If the management decision stands, that means students who are supposed to pay 41, 400 Naira as fees who did not pay before the deadline given, will now pay 61,400 Naira, with the additional 20,000 Naira as charges for late payment.
