Organized Labour says it would be left with no option than to deploy the industrial mechanisms granted in labour laws for the defense of workers’ rights, should the government makes true what it calls swirling speculation of the planned increase in electricity tariff.
In a letter to the Minister of Power and signed by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ayuba Wabba, Labour said that it dismisses and describes all ongoing planned increases in electricity tariffs as mere speculations.
Organised Labour said it wishes to draw the attention of the government to the wave of speculation especially as widely reported in the media that there are fresh plans to grant approval to Electricity Distribution Companies to hike electricity tariff.
It said that it writes to remind the Honourable Minister that Organized Labour on September 28, 2020, through the Federal Government and Organized Labour Committee on Electricity Tariff agreed to freeze further increases in electricity tariff until the committee concludes its work and its report adopted by all the Principals in the Committee.
While asking the Minister to accept the renewed assurances of Nigerian workers, it said the letter serves as a formal notice of industrial action.
