As the resident doctors strike lingers for longer than expected with the Federal Government not just turning a deaf ear to their demands but rather issuing threats, experts fear that the health sector is on its way to total collapse.
A reality they say if not urgently reversed will set the sector decades behind particularly in terms of manpower.
The month of August has gradually come to a close with no hope in sight for an end to industrial action by the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, which began in the early days of the month.
A place where the poor could run to for treatment the Federal Medical Centre Makurdi now seems deserted as there is a limit to how many patients it’s few consultants can attend to.
Same for the State-owned university teaching hospital who may not have the same concerns but are compelled to continue with the action.
Of greater concern is the fate of the health sector even if demands are met as many are already on their way out.
With this huge gap already created by the prolonged industrial action, one wonders if there is any hope for survival for the common man.
