The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has detained former Governor of Nasarawa State, Tanko Al-Makura, and his wife in connection with allegations of misappropriation of funds while he was in office.

Al-Makura who is a serving Senator representing Nasarawa South senatorial district was invited by the anti-graft agency in the early hours of Wednesday along with his wife, Mairo.

Although the motive behind their arrest and detention is still sketchy, sources within the anti-graft agency disclosed that the former governor and his wife’s ordeal may be in connection with some suspicious transactions involving their companies, including Ta’al Hotel in Lafia and other businesses.

The source further disclosed that about 55 accounts controlled by the couple and their companies were involved in some suspicious transactions amounting to billions of naira when Al-Makura was the governor of Nasarawa State between 2011 and 2019.

Further investigation revealed that in one of the accounts, less than $250 was lodged in the two years preceding his assumption of office as governor of the state but huge deposits started flowing in when he assumed office in 2011.

Deposits into these accounts and a particular domiciliary account were said to have been made by companies who allegedly carried out contracts for the state government.
