After spending close to a quarter at the Suez Canal, Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority has finally agreed to release the Evergreen container ship for an undisclosed amount.
The 220,000 tonnes ship had been held up over a compensation dispute by the Suez Canal Authorities. The settlement contract is due to be signed tomorrow after which the signees will be able to watch the ship leave the dock.
The Evergreen ship was stuck for close to two weeks holding up $9.6 billion worth of goods from moving to and back the Suez canal.
The Chairman of the SCA, Osama Rabie disclosed that the canal with receive a 75 tonnes tug boat as part of a settlement plan but refused to divulge other information of the deal
“We preserved the rights of the authority in full, preserved our relationship with the company and also political relations with Japan,” – Osama Rabie
Despite the Ever Given incident, the Suez Canal still managed to generate $3 billion in revenue in the first half of 2021
