A human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, and 42 Civil Society Organisations’ Representatives have staged protests to occupy the National Assembly against claims of secretly smuggling some sections into the final draft of the Electoral Act (amendment) bill 2020 by federal lawmakers.
Speaking to reporters in Abuja, the group said it will not relent on staging protests to the National Assembly until those involved in the act are brought to justice to serve as a deterrent to other desperate politicians in the country
The Representatives of the group argued that the National Assembly does not have the power to ignore the opinions of the people during public hearings but to reflect their will in all legislative actions for Nigerians to enjoy the dividends of democracy.
The group asked the independent national electoral commission, INEC to persuade the federal Lawmakers in pushing for the electronic transmission of results to avoid electoral fraud and violence.
Forty-two Civil Society Organisations under the Alliance of Civil Society Organizations for Expansion of Electoral and Democratic Space, ACCESS, is aimed at ensuring that the electoral act (amendment) bill 2020 is passed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.
In another development, a group of visually impaired persons barged into the National assembly to protest for space in the political arrangement of the country.
They called on the president to address the security challenges facing the nation as some of their members are also been killed in the attacks by bandits and terrorists across the country.
