Botswana energy regulation has granted a 100MW generation license to a local energy firm, Shumba Energy. This will allow it to set up a large-scale solar power plant in the country.
The company’s Managing Director, Mashale Phumaphi disclosed that will the newly granted permits, raising capital expenditure, and funding the project which is estimated to cost $80 million have begun.
The company plans to operate as a merchant power producer feeding the Southern Africa Power Pool.
Shumba Energy has revealed plans to implement the project in two phases, the first of which will ensue in the latter half of this year.
