Bayelsa State Govt. Aligns With UN Office On Drugs Abuse, Crime

Bayelsa Governor, Douye Diri says the state will align with the United Nations office on drugs and crime to dispatch drug councillors to all the council areas to curb the spate of drugs abuse in the state.

At a courtesy visit to Governor Diri on Tuesday in Yenagoa, the Country Representative, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes, Oliver Stolp, acknowledged the government’s efforts in the fight against the global menace.

A survey by the United Nations Office on drug and crime ranked the south-south region of Nigeria as having the highest drug abuse cases in the country with Bayelsa counted among top list states

This development prompted the setting up of the Bayelsa state drug abuse protection and rehabilitation committee by Governor Diri.

The visit of the Country Representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime to the Governor was to solidify efforts to eradicate drug abuse and other related crimes.

To Governor Diri, the fight to curb the global challenge in Bayelsa was already on course with the setting up of the committee among other plans by his government in meaningful engaging the youths.

Bayelsans had last Saturday, June 26, joined the world to observe the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with a sensitization road walk.
