Steven Speilberg’s production company, Amblin Partners has signed a 2-year multifilm deal with the streaming platform after a firm rebuttal by Spielberg to have Netflix movies feature in the Oscars. In his words…
Once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie,” Spielberg told ITV in March of 2019. “I don’t believe films that are just given token qualifications in a couple of theaters for less than a week should qualify for the Academy Award nomination.”
It appears something has changed with Speilberg, one of the most respected in the movie industry, who in his words wants to protect the theatrical experience. The move will almost instantly solidify Netflix as a go-to streaming platform in the midst of stiff competition from Apple, Disney, and the likes.
Netflix who has had several Oscar nominations has never won an award, however, with Speilberg on board, with a reputation of more Oscar awards than any living filmmaker, the odds may soon turn in favor of Netflix.
