The governments of Imo and Abia States are calling for one additional state in the South East region of Nigeria to level up with other regions in the country.
The two states made their submissions known in Owerri at the House of Representatives public hearing for the review of the 1999 Constitution.
The South-East zonal public hearing under the auspices of the House of Representatives on the review of the 1999 Constitution for Abia and the Imo States was earlier suspended due to the rising insecurity in Imo State.
For equity and fairness, the participants believe that additional states in the South-East region will address the issue of marginalisation in the zone.
For Nigeria Labour Congress and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, there is the need for local government autonomy.
With rising agitation across the nation on inequality and marginalization, it is believed that an amended Constitution will ensure equity and fairness, especially to the satisfaction of the southeasterners.
