The Supreme Court has dismissed the certificate forgery allegations made against the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki.

The action was instituted by the all progressives congress, APC and its chieftain Willson Edobor.

Justice Emmanuel Agim who read the unanimous judgement held that the appellants failed to provide substantial evidence to establish their claims.

The issue was centred around Governor Obaseki’s 1979 certificate obtained from the University of Ibadan.

The contention was that the certificate was forged. It was one of the claims made by the former All Progressives Congress, APC, Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole when he denied Obaseki the APC ticket for a second term.

Consequently, Obaseki decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and won his second term.

The appeal decided by the Supreme court arose from the March 18 Court of Appeal judgement which affirmed January 19, 2021, Federal High Court decision dismissing the suit against Obaseki.

Justice Emmanuel Agim, while reading the judgment, agreed with the lower courts that the appellants failed woefully to prove their case as they could not provide any disclaimer from the school that the results were not issued by them to Obaseki.

The five-member panel also awarded the cost of 1 million naira in favour of Governor Obaseki.

Meanwhile, officials of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, barred journalists from entering the Supreme Court to cover the judgment on the grounds that reporting the proceedings of the apex court will sabotage the nationwide strike.

However, lawyers, politicians, and litigants were allowed into the court premises.
