The issue of decentralization of power, restructuring, state police, and prohibition of open grazing is top amongst issues presented at the ongoing Public hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution holding in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
The event was well attended by representatives from Benue, Nassarawa, and the Plateau States. However, drama ensued when the Chairman of the Senate Committee stopped the representative of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, from making their presentation.
It is a common fact that the peace and unity of Nigeria are being threatened in recent times which perhaps formed the basis for this meeting with representatives from Benue, Nassarawa, and Plateau to lend their voice in this exercise.
The event was declared open by Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, who also made his presentation.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the committee, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, said the review is to ensure that citizens’ inputs are captured.
However, the drama started when the spokesperson of the NULGE was stopped from making his presentation, which led to a protest and walkout by members of the NULGE.
Such meeting is not new to Nigerians, but citizens are hopeful that this one will not go the way of previous ones which failed to address the many problems the country is facing.
