The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has confirmed that its office in Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State was on Friday gutted by fire.
The Electoral Commission in a statement by its National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye, said the Enugu State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Emeka Ononamadu, reported the incident to the headquarters.
The INEC described as alarming the rate at which its facilities have been involved in fire outbreaks in parts of the country in recent times.
The statement said the latest incident in Udenu, in Enugu State, occurred about 8.40 pm on Thursday without any casualties.
The statement, however, noted that the office complex was massively damaged with electoral materials and office equipment destroyed in the fire.
The Commission appreciated the efforts of the State Fire Service and called for a thorough Police investigation into the matter.
This is the third similar incident involving INEC Local Government Offices in three states of the Southeast and South-South in the last two weeks.
First was the destruction of the INEC office in Essien Udim LGA of Akwa Ibom State on the 2nd of May, 2021.
This was quickly followed by a fire incident at the Ohafia LGA office a week after.
Following this development, INEC has said it has concluded plans to convene an emergency meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on election security.
