One thousand seven hundred and sixty-five new polling units have been created by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Niger State.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, of the Commission, Professor Samuel Egwu, disclosed this in Minna, Niger State capital.
Professor Egwu told the stakeholders at the gathering that the Commission has carried out the exercise nationwide, as part of efforts to ease the movement of persons from the communities that are far away from their existing polling units.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner explained that the new polling units are the former Voting Points, which were meant to decongest eligible voters to exercise their civic responsibility on election Day.
The Director of Operations Department of the electoral umpire, Muhammad Yusuf, assured the stakeholders that creating the new polling units is part of preparations towards smooth conduct of the 2023 general elections.
The Commission has assured the stakeholders that after the 2023 general elections, new polling units would be created.
Already, Niger State had 3, 185 polling units, with the new, 1, 765 polling units, bringing the total to four 4, 950 polling units.
The stakeholders stressed the need for the Commission to make its future exercises more people-participatory.
