Salva Kiir dissolves Parliament

In what has been celebrated as an overdue gesture by activists and civil societies, South Sudan’s Prime Minister, Salva Kiir has dissolved the nations sitting parliament to allow for the appointment of new Members of Parliament.

Based on a ratified peace deal signed in the 2018 peace agreement, 25% of the new legislature will emerge from Riek Machar’s party and the rest could emerge from the SPLM  party. All 550 legislators will be nominated by the multiple political parties in the country.

Although South Sudan seems to be slowly executing the terms in the 2018 peace deal, it still has a long way to go in recovering from the inter ethnic crisis that has been ranked as one of the worst in recent times with over 300,000 people dead.
