A resolution by Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed to proscribe the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front and the Oromo Liberation Army as terrorist groups have been approved by Ethiopia’s lower house of parliament.
The Prime Minister who recently instigated a crackdown on the TPLF who have been in leadership for close to 30 years accuses the TPLF of arming, training, and financing violent elements and participating in attacks themselves.
The crackdown led to the displacement of over 900,000 people who fled into neighbouring countries like Sudan and even Eritrea. The Prime Minister declared the completion of the crackdown but for many Tigrayans, life is nowhere close to returning to normal.
Dr. Abraham Belay has been appointed in the region as the interim leader of the troubled region, taking over from Dr. Mulu Nega.
