The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Rivers State has kick-started the process of decongesting existing polling units to increase the number all over the country.

This was made known by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, of the Commission in Rivers State, Obo Effanga, during a chat with reporters in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Effanga said that the exercise will assist in meeting the over three million registered voters in the state which will increase further after the forthcoming voters’ registration exercise.

This is the first time in 25 years that the Commission was making an attempt to increase the number of polling units in the country.

Rivers State Electoral Commissioner said the exercise will lead to the upgrading of 2,424 voting points out of the existing 4,442 polling units in the state.

He said the electoral umpire will not site polling units in private compounds, religious compounds, and stressed that units situated at private residences will be removed.

He commended his staff who had been in the field for identifying new locations for polling units without bias.
