An early morning fire outbreak has razed the data processing unit of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Kano State.

The fire incident, blamed on power surge, damaged all facilities at the unit, but with no life loss.

When reporters arrived at the scene, the fire was still burning, with men of the fire service struggling to put it off.

The fire incident largely affected the data processing unit, with computers, monitors, printers, photocopy machines all burnt.

Reacting to the incident, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Kano State, Professor Riskiwa Shehu, blamed the development on power surge.

He said it took about 40 minutes before men of the fire service arrived due to the distance, and this led to much damage to the unit.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Samaila Dikko, who came on a spot assessment, said the situation is under control and assured the Commission of total support

The State Resident Electoral Commissioner wants a fire service van to be stationed at the Commission, to easily forestall any fire outbreak.
