A medical doctor at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Edo state, Sunday Elusoji, has lost his license to practice medicine.

This was one of the decisions reached by the Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Disciplinary Tribunal in Abuja after finding him guilty of the unprofessional practice.

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN Disciplinary Tribunal which has the status of a High Court is set up to try offences bordering on medical negligence, unprofessional practice, and other specified offences under the Council’s Practitioners’ Act.

The just-completed session witnessed the dismissal of a medical doctor, Elusoji, from the profession.

He was said to have wrongly advised a patient of risks involved in a certain operation that led to the patient’s deformity.

According to evidence made against him, Elusoji also failed to obtain the patient’s consent on the treatment option that led to the amputation of the wrong limb, accidental termination of the patient’s pregnancy, and prescribing the wrong drug for the same patient who was correctly diagnosed.

Elusoji who also practices privately in his clinic ‘Our Medical Centre’, also known as Our Hospital, located at number 2, Jemila Road, Ikpoba Hill, Benin City, was also guilty of impersonating the University of Benin Teaching Hospital where he works by issuing medical reports of tests conducted in his private health facility on the letterhead of the teaching hospital. The council said that its decision will be enforced.

While other cases of unethical conduct were adjourned to the Tribunal’s 8th session, other judgments delivered include a 12-month suspension of another medical doctor, Sullyman Kokori, while another doctor, Adolphus Oriaifo, bagged six months suspension for not giving his now-late patient, the standard of care necessary for the condition he was.
