Two people were on Sunday night ambushed by suspected herdsmen in Wereng village of Riyom Local Government Area in Plateau State, North Central Nigeria.
It was gathered that incident took place at about 7:00pm near a military base along Wereng-Byei village road, in Riyom Local Government Area of the State.
Chief Executive Officer of a local non-governmental organization, Emancipation Centre for Crisis Victims in Nigeria (ECCVN), Dalyop Solomon, said the villagers were returning from Wereng Camp when the militias emerged from the nearby bush and attacked them.
One of the victims, Stephen Joshua, was hacked to death, while the other, Yohanna Dauda narrowly escaped but not without injuries.
Confirming the development to reporters, the Plateau State Police Command through its spokesman, ASP Gabriel Ubah, said the Command is already investigating the incident.
Dozens of villagers have been killed in isolated attacks in Riyom LGA since December last year with many of them sacked from their ancestral lands in series of attacks within the last three years.
