Delta state made history on Friday as the state with the highest number of public universities in Nigeria when the National Universities Commission, NUC, granted recognition to three state universities established by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa from one existing polytechnic and two colleges of education.
The universities are Delta State University of Education, Agbor, Delta State University of Science and Technology, Osoro, and Denis Osadebe University, Anwani, Asaba.
Worried by the increasing number of university degree seekers and the decline in enrolment into non-university institutions, the Delta State Governor has approached the NUC to approve the creation of three new universities.
The Governor accompanied by commissioners and other dignitaries presented documents of the converted institutions to the executive secretary of the NUC, Professor Abubakar Rasheed
The three institutions are the college of education Agbor be known as Delta State University of education, Agbor. Delta State polytechnic Osoro to become Delta State University of Science and Technology Osor and Denis Osadebe college of Education Answani Asaba to be known as Denis Osadebe University, Asaba.
With these three new universities, Delta State now has two federal and four state universities, making it the highest state with public universities in Nigeria.
These latest recognition brings the number of state universities in Nigeria to 53.
