Microsoft, others in running to buy Discord for $10 billion

Discord, an app created in 2015 but with a User Interface that is quite similar to Slack has just recently reported over 140 million active monthly users and raised $100 million in funding July 2020 is now up for grabs by big tech for $10 billion.

Microsoft, Amazon and Epic Games are all in talks to acquire the gaming chat app. Discord is also considering going public on its own. It is believed that Microsoft is looking to acquire platforms that resonate with its already existing offerings and Discord will fit squarely with Xbox

The app, which was largely used for gaming and was on multiple occasions compared to Slack and Twitch is not only for gaming but has Chat, Livestream and Social networking functionality making it a favorite amongst millennials and GenZers.

Discord made most of its revenue from its premium tier Nitro which allows users to upgrade or downgrade at will. In any case, it is an app both Slack and Facebook need to watch out for since it harnesses many of their functionalities and could easily tip them off the market.
