The Nigeria Union of pensioners, NUP, has directed members across the 36 states to begin mass protest after a 21-day ultimatum over deliberate delay by the government to carry out the consequential adjustment on pensions.

The President of NUP, Abel Afolayan, at a briefing in Abuja, said it is pathetic to note that senior citizens who have served the country in their youthful ages will be denied their rights as embedded in the constitution and 2014 pension act, as amended.

This is the umpteenth time pensioners union in Nigeria will be demanding adjustment to their pensions following a 2018 upward review of the national minimum wage for workers.

Afolayan said the Nigerian government must be seen not to have abandoned the demands of those he calls ‘suffocating’ senior citizens, as they are capable of going spiritual over perceived delay to attend to their requests.
