According to the National Bureau of Statistics, one in three Nigerians willing to work had no jobs in the last quarter of last year. Nigeria’s unemployment rate currently stands at 33.3% and is the second-highest in the world.

The figure estimates that 23.2 million Nigerians of age are unable to find meaningful employment. It is the highest figure reached in 13 years. According to subject matter experts, the unemployment rate in the country has quadrupled since the recession of 2016.

The news was anticipated by the Economic Sustainability Plan team who predicted the sad turn of events if urgent steps were not taken, however, the pandemic only exercabated the matter. Currently Imo State holds the record of the state with the highest rate of unemployment at 56.6% followed by Adamawa State at 54.9 percent while Cross River followed closely at 53.7%.

Lagos State recorded the lowest underemployment rate at 4.5%
