Vaccination against the Covid-19 pandemic has commenced in Akwa Ibom State after it received its share of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine.
The event was flagged off by the state Commissioner for Health, Prof Augustine Umoh, and the first recipients of the vaccine were front-line health workers.
Earlier in the week, Akwa Ibom State had received 69,030 doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine being its share and immediately commenced vaccination at the General Hospital, Ituk Mbang.
The State Commissioner for Health, who unveiled the vaccines, sheds light on the criteria for the first set of recipients.
Prof Umoh commended Governor Udom Emmanuel for his commitment to providing quality health care delivery and the health workers, for their effort and assured that the vaccine was safe.
The first recipient of the vaccine was a medical doctor serving at the COVID-19 treatment centre Ituk Mbang, Christian Nsikan.
