The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has said the legislature as the backbone of any democracy requires regular capacity building for it to effectively provide oversight on the executive.

In a keynote address delivered at the opening of a 3-day capacity building workshop for legislative aides organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Gbajabiamila, represented by Deputy House Leader, Peter Akpatason, said a lack of adequate capacity building workshop for the legislature has limited its ability to scrutinize the affairs of the executive.

“For a long time, many African countries have failed to consolidate democracy and achieve good governance due to capacity challenges faced by the legislature limits its ability to effectively provide oversight over the executive.

” In most cases, the legislature and responsiveness, thereby rendering the legislature ineffective in drawing the development process.”

Speaking at the event, the Director-General, NILDS, Abubakar Sulaiman, thanked the leadership of the 9th National Assembly for its commitment to improving the quality of legislative aides.

He said the NILDS will continue to provide the technical assistance required, adding that it has concluded plans to train at least 2,000 legislative aides this year.
