Following the disclosure by the British Government to return the stolen funds by the former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, nine representatives from Delta state have filed to halt the appropriation of the funds
The representatives, led by Ndudi Elumelu raised a motion at the plenary that the funds which as disclosed by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami will be allocated to infrastructure projects across Niger State, Lagos-Ibadan expressway, and other federal projects does not sit well with the lawmakers.
The AGF disclosed that the funds will not be returned to Delta State as the charges pressed against Ibori were not violations of state laws but federal laws, and also the parties involved in the repatriation of the funds were on the federal level and not on the state level.
He also disclosed that an additional estimate of over £100 million of looted funds is still expected from the James Ibori case alone.
The representatives have argued that the stolen funds belong to Delta State and as such should be returned to the coffers of the state’s government as it was initially allocated.
To this effect, the Committee on Finance, Justice and Recovered Funds have been mandated to duly investigate the matter and requested the disbursement of the funds until the investigation is concluded.
