Kano State Government has fixed Sunday, March 7, for the debate between the Islamic cleric, Abdul Jabbar Kabara, and other Islamic scholars who were banned from preaching in the State.

The case may not hold as the Magistrate Court ordered the State Government to maintain status-quo following application against the planned debate.

The Magistrate Court had earlier given an order stopping the clerics from preaching and teaching; shutting down their mosques.

The Attorney General of Kano State, Musa Lawal, told reporters that the State Government will respect the court order.

Abdul-Jabbar Kabara was accused of blasphemy in his preaching and was consequently suspended by the Kano State government from preaching.

The Jamaatul Nasril Islam led by Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar, has distanced itself from participating in the matter saying that the cleric deserves punishment.

Magistrate Muhammad Idris adjourned matter till March 22, for continuation of the case.

A Kano-based legal practitioner, Maaruf Yakasai, filed the legal suit against Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara.
