Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, says the root of many crimes and violent acts in the country can be traced to the abuse of drugs and other dangerous substances.
Governor Wike who on Tuesday played host to the new Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, says while the government intensifies the fight against terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, armed robbers, and other violent crimes efforts must also be made to reduce the abuse of drugs and other illicit substances.
Five weeks after he assumed office as the new Chief Executive of the NDLEA, retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, has commenced a nationwide familiarization tour of the various commands of the agency.
His first port of call was Rivers State where he began his military career 48 years ago.
And while in town, the NDLEA boss has also decided to make a stop at the Government House, Port Harcourt to solicit the cooperation of the state government in the fight against drug abuse.
He said that concerted effort must be made to deal with the supply and abuse of drugs in the country.
Like the NDLEA boss, Governor Wike said that the root of most crimes in the country can be traced to illicit drugs.
While assuring the NDLEA of his administration’s support, Governor Wike wants General Marwa to replicate the magic he performed when he was military administrator of Lagos at the agency.
Tuesday also saw the Rivers State government presenting three vehicles to the NDLEA to aid its operations in the state.
